Father Christmas Get Together
On a damp and uninspiring afternoon at Brick Kiln Lane, three teams made up of Birmingham WFC's finest, came together to celebrate Christmas by way of a friendly Walking Footie Tournament.
The Over 70's team dressed as Father Christmas, the 63's Whites team dressed rather cutely as Elves and the 63's Blues dressed as themselves (and yes that is Paul Feeney wearing his normal everyday leggings)!!
Game 1. Over 70's v 63 Whites
It was a very even affair throughout and the 70's spurned the opportunity to take the lead when they missed a penalty awarded in their favour for encroachment in the penalty area.
However, the damp and gloomy afternoon was lit up with a superb solo effort goal scored by Roy " Road Runner " Williams. He collected the ball in his own half, and despite instructions from his manager to pass the ball, he just continued, rounded three opposition players before finishing into the far corner across the goalkeeper. All this was accomplished WITHOUT running!! Well done Roy.
Game 2. Over 70's v 63 Blues
This was a potentially tough game for the 70's playing against one of the most successful League sides in recent years. The Blues had a full complement of players to choose from and the 70's are a side in a period of change missing the Thorp brothers, Decka and Malcolm, along with their defensive stalwart Barry Huntington.
However, it was a great game with the Blues having most of the possession and the 70's putting on a great rearguard performance to earn a well-deserved draw.
Game 3. Over 63 Whites v 63 Blues
Another well contested match ended in a 2 - 0 win for the Blues. However, they did not have all their own way, and the Whites should have taken the lead before they were awarded a penalty for encroachment into the area by a Blues defender.
Richard D stepped up and hit what looked like the perfect penalty, only for Ross Everton the Blues keeper to deny him the goal he had been working so hard for all afternoon.
Final Result.
63 Blues Champions by a goal difference of one over the 70's
Despite the dull and gloomy weather, a great afternoon was enjoyed by players and spectators alike. Everyone then moved into Bowls Club Bar to enjoy a Christmas drink or two and a buffet put on by Gill.
A total profit of £115 was made on the day, which everyone agreed should be donated to Cancer Research UK. On hearing this an impromptu whip round ensued and another £100 was added to make the final donation £215.
Finally, thanks to Simon and Brendan for refereeing, not only today, but for the numerous times in practice friendlies running up to National competitions throughout the year.
Well done everyone and let us do it again next year!!
